Charters Towers is an historic country gold mining town now education and cattle capital of North Queensland Australia . Or called lower Gulf region of Queensland, Australia .

The authentic, gold rush city of Charters Towers sits amidst the beauty and sparseness of The Outback. It’s just 90 minutes'or 135 kilometres easy drive from Townsville North Queensland . Where you can step back in time into a living museum. The spectacular buildings, the heritage pubs, the shops, museums and houses provide a treasure trove of experiences for visitors.

What was once a thriving town known as "the world" during the gold rush era in the early 1900's, Charters Towers today stands as a living museum ,education and cattle capital of North Queensland allowing visitors to step back in time.

Motels and Caravan Parks fit in with the old in 'The World' . The old mining town of Charters Towers has many of the best preserved historic buildings in Queensland.

Gold was discovered at Towers Hill by a young aboriginal boy named Jupiter Mossman and it wasn't long before the news of the find attracted men from everywhere, all keen for a share in a new found wealth . And with the rapid growth of the town and the establishment of Australia's first regional stock exchange, which, although not operational, is still open to visitors today.

Today the charm of Charters Towers lies in the spectacular heritage buildings that are now restored and used for everyday business. The magnificent heritage "pubs", shops, museums and houses provide a treasure trove for visitors to experience and learn of life in these early pioneering days of outback Queensland. At the end of Gill Street stands the restored Stock Exchange Building. Australia's only Stock Exchange to be built outside a State Capital, it used to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with three calls daily.

With the modern methods of gold extraction the Towers is now experiencing a second gold boom, bringing renewed prosperity and wealth to the city. Now known as the education capital of the north, the Towers has a boarding and day student population of about 3,500 , it changes each year as the schools grow .

Must-sees include the Venus Battery, (the last in-tact gold milling site that operated in the 1900's) .
