Charters Towers is an historic country gold mining town now education and cattle capital of North Queensland Australia . Or called lower Gulf region of Queensland, Australia .
The authentic, gold rush city of Charters Towers sits amidst the beauty and sparseness of
The Outback. It’s just 90 minutes'or 135 kilometres easy drive from Townsville North
Queensland . Where you can step back in time into a living museum. The spectacular
buildings, the heritage pubs, the shops, museums and houses provide a treasure trove
of experiences for visitors.
What was once a thriving town known as "the world" during the gold rush era in the
early 1900's, Charters Towers today stands as a living museum ,education and cattle
capital of North Queensland allowing visitors to step back in time.
Motels and Caravan Parks fit in with the old in 'The World' . The old mining town of
Charters Towers has many of the best preserved historic buildings in Queensland.
Gold was discovered at Towers Hill by a young aboriginal boy named Jupiter Mossman
and it wasn't long before the news of the find attracted men from everywhere, all
keen for a share in a new found wealth . And with the rapid growth of the town and
the establishment of Australia's first regional stock exchange, which, although
not operational, is still open to visitors today.
Today the charm of Charters Towers lies in the spectacular heritage buildings
that are now restored and used for everyday business. The magnificent heritage
"pubs", shops, museums and houses provide a treasure trove for visitors to
experience and learn of life in these early pioneering days of outback Queensland.
At the end of Gill Street stands the restored Stock Exchange Building. Australia's
only Stock Exchange to be built outside a State Capital, it used to operate 24
hours a day, 7 days a week with three calls daily.
With the modern methods of gold extraction the Towers is now experiencing a second
gold boom, bringing renewed prosperity and wealth to the city.Now known as the
education capital of the north, the Towers has a boarding and day student population
of about 3,500 , it changes each year as the schools grow .
Must-sees include the Venus Battery, (the last in-tact gold milling site that
operated in the 1900's) . Many of the shops are still as they were at the turn
of the century, and you'll find the locals very easy to talk to. If you would
like to know something about the town just ask a local .Other historical buildings
include the Old Post Office, Thornburg House, Ay Ot Look Out and one of
Charters Towers major attractions, the Bank of Commerce Building, built in 1891,
now fully restored, housing the performing arts theatre, a restaurant and bar plus
two cinemas.The townships museum takes you back along the path of Charters Towers
history .There are several excellent cattle stations in the area offer farm-stays
for visitors who want to experience life on an outback cattle station.
